Arte     De-MentE

Rosa Huitzitzilin, an artivista of the Mexican diaspora, she has been creating art from an early age. Her Mixed Media incorporates naturalist elements that conjure up powerful sentiments of indigenism and dignity centered around the emancipation of the marginalized. Countering appropriating forces, Rosa’s art looks to contribute to social justice and evokes the cosmovisions of the Global South through creative autonomy.

She is an autodidact artist that refuses to succumb to commodification or the dehumanization of branding. Drawing inspiration from the experiences of others as well as her own, her work brings forth the beautiful ancestral traditions and everyday life.

The name Huitzitzilin - meaning Hummingbird in Nahuatl - was adopted as part of an ongoing process of decolonization of the self and reclaiming of a lost cultural identity. Rosa comes from a family of indigenous farm workers from Tlil Apan (black river in Nahuatl), she identifies as an anti-imperialist womyn, ecoanararchist, who is currently studying sociology and hopes to continue fighting for social justice.

Rosa’s compassion not only manifests itself in her art but social activism as well. Her consciousness extends into a deep appreciation for the natural world and humanism reflected in the community work she engages in. Rosa is a co-founder of Passaic Pedal, an urban bike collective for community building, social responsibility and social justice. She is also a core-member of community garden "Raices del Sur" initiated in 2014 which functions as an educational space for children, youth and womyn of its local community, who like her come from the global South. Through workshops, Raices del Sur aims to promote food justice, community resilience, as well as decolonization and preservation of ancestral roots .

"Art is universal and transcends geographical, sociological and metaphysical barriers such as borders, language, race, and class. I need no institutions to legitimize or quantify my creativity"

"EL ARTE ES UNA HERRAMIENTA DE INTERVENCION SOCIAL"
